Golding Birds Eye Maple RingSpindles™

Description

Hand crafted in the USA, these 2¾ inch Golding RingSpindles™ have a 2¾” whorl and a walnut shaft measuring 5/16″ x 8 ¾”. They are a versatile spindle of medium weight, ranging from  approx 37g to 57g [1.3 oz to 1.75 oz].

How to choose a spindle weight

Fine wools such as Merino and Cormo have short, highly crimped (wavy) fibers that are best suited for fine to medium yarns. A light to medium weight spindle is a good choice for these fibers. These fibers are usually difficult for the beginner to handle.

Medium wools (Corriedale, Finn, Columbia, Jacob) and Long Wools (Romney, Lincoln, Coopworth, Border Leicester) have a longer fiber length, with a more open crimp. These wools are easy to spin. Light, medium and heavy weight spindles can be used to spin a wide range of yarns from these fibers, from fingering to bulky. For these wools I prefer using a medium to heavy spindle ( 37g to 57g /1.3 oz to 2.0 oz) to spin fingering to worsted weight yarn.

Spindle Care

Keep your RingSpindle™ away from direct sunlight and sources of direct heat to prevent the wooden whorl from drying out. An occasional oiling will keep the wooden whorl and shaft looking new and beautiful. Wood likes almost any oil. Mineral oil or pure vegetable oil can be used, as well as any oil you use for your fine furniture.  The Bronze Alloy Ring with Black Finish is maintenance free.

Sourcing & Materials

Sustainable sourcing

The equipment I stock comes from makers I respect — Ashford, Schacht, Majacraft — who build things designed to last decades, not seasons. The fibre is Tasmanian where I can source it, because buying from down the road is the most straightforward version of this. I won't stock something I don't believe in, which means the range is deliberately small.

What I'd use myself

Everything in the store has been through the same filter: would I use this myself? If the answer is no, it doesn't make it onto the website. That means the range is deliberately narrow — there are no products here to fill a gap or round out a catalogue. What's here is here because I'd stake my own time and reputation on it.

Wool miles

Fibre has a journey before it reaches you — where it was grown, where it was shorn, where it was processed, and how far it travelled at each stage. I think you deserve to know that. Where I can tell you the origin, I will. Where I can source locally, I do. This isn't a marketing position — it's just what honest dealing looks like.
